India Cracks Down on International Online Scam Network Linked to Cambodia
Major Cyber Fraud Network Uncovered: Delhi Police Arrest 11 in Racket Linked to Cambodia-Based Operators
In a significant breakthrough, Delhi police have apprehended 11 individuals involved in a massive cyber fraud scheme that utilized mule bank accounts to dupe unsuspecting Indian citizens.
The Case Began with a Single Victim
A 60-year-old man reported being defrauded of ₹22.67 lakh through an online investment scam. He was lured by a fake advertisement promoting an AI-based trading platform, which promised unusually high returns and cited the Union finance minister as an endorser.
Network Structure and Investigation
Investigations revealed that the arrested individuals were part of a larger syndicate that operated mule bank accounts, using fake or manipulated credentials to route illicit funds. These accounts received money from victims and transferred it through multiple layers to obscure the financial trail.
Seized Materials and Further Analysis
- Dozens of mobile phones
- Fake SIM cards
- Bank passbooks
- Cheque books
- ATM cards
- PAN cards
- Digital devices such as laptops and desktops
- Point-of-sale machines and UPI scanners
Funds were routed through multiple accounts across states before being consolidated, a common tactic to complicate tracking and recovery efforts.
International Links and Growing Scale of Organized Cybercrime
The syndicate’s international links, connecting to cybercriminals operating from Cambodia, significantly increased the complexity of enforcement and highlighted the growing scale of organized cybercrime.
Experts’ Advice and Ongoing Investigation
As the investigation continues, officials anticipate further arrests and expect to identify additional victims. Experts advise citizens to exercise caution when encountering unsolicited investment offers, avoid clicking on unknown links, and verify the authenticity of platforms before transferring funds.
