India Under Cyber Siege: 47 Million Attacks and 130,000 Daily Web Threats
India Faces Surge in Cyber Threats
The rapid growth of digital services in India has led to a corresponding increase in cyber threats, with a staggering 47 million online attacks blocked in 2025, according to a report by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky.
Web-Based Threats on the Rise
This translates to an average of approximately 130,000 web-based threats per day, primarily consisting of phishing, malware, suspicious websites, and online fraud.
The widespread adoption of digital payments, online banking, and internet-based services has created an environment conducive to cybercriminal activity.
India Ranks 62nd Globally in Cyber Threats
As a result, internet users in India are increasingly vulnerable to online threats, with nearly 24.7% of users exposed to some form of cyber threat in 2025.
India ranked 62nd globally in terms of users affected by web-based cyber threats, highlighting the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures.
According to Jaideep Singh, Head of Kaspersky India, cybercriminals are continually evolving their tactics to deceive victims. One emerging trend is the use of QR codes to conceal phishing links, which can redirect users to fake websites and put their banking or personal data at risk.
Evolving Cyber Threats
Browser-based attacks remain a common method employed by hackers, who exploit vulnerabilities in browsers and their plugins to gain unauthorized system access.
The report also noted the rise of fileless malware, which operates by hiding in system memory, making it challenging for traditional antivirus software to detect.
Cybercriminals are using highly sophisticated methods to trap people. Users should avoid sharing information on unknown links, suspicious QR codes, or fake websites, as even a small mistake can lead to huge financial losses. – Professor Triveni Singh, renowned cybercrime expert and former IPS officer.
Mitigating Cyber Risks
To mitigate these risks, cybersecurity experts recommend that internet users adopt safe online practices, including the use of strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and cautious online behavior.
As cyber threats continue to evolve, it is essential for governments, institutions, and citizens to remain aware and vigilant about cybersecurity.
