Authorities in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, have detained six individuals following the discovery of approximately ₹403 crore in suspected fraudulent funds traced through nearly 60 bank accounts.

Key Details of the Fraud Case

The Prem Nagar police department reported that the network allegedly facilitated the movement of illicit proceeds by routing transactions through multiple financial institutions to obscure their origin. The arrested suspects are linked to a scheme involving 35 accounts registered in Jhansi, with the remainder distributed across other regions.

Network Operations

The investigation revealed that the network did not directly target victims but instead acted as an intermediary for cybercriminals. Funds obtained from fraudulent activities were allegedly transferred into accounts managed by the group, then redistributed through additional channels to mask their source.

Cryptocurrency Conversion

During the investigation, authorities intercepted efforts to convert ₹9.75 lakh into USDT, a cryptocurrency, through one of the implicated accounts. This conversion was part of a broader strategy to further obscure the funds’ trajectory.

Suspects and Their Roles

Armaan, a resident of Gariya Phatak, is identified as the alleged mastermind, with police stating he earned approximately ₹22 crore within a single year through the operation. Other suspects include Satyam Verma, Adnan Hussain, Adil Hussain, Abhishek Chaudhary, John Paul, and Archit Srivastava.

Arrested Individuals

  • Armaan: Alleged mastermind, earned ₹22 crore in a year.
  • Satyam Verma: Involved in managing accounts and transfers.
  • Adnan Hussain: Coordinated with external actors.
  • Adil Hussain: Executed transfers and managed accounts.
  • Abhishek Chaudhary: Assisted in redistributing funds.
  • John Paul: Linked to cryptocurrency conversion efforts.
  • Archit Srivastava: Part of the coordination network.

Investigation and Findings

Financial investigators are analyzing transaction records, ATM logs, and digital devices seized during the probe to reconstruct the flow of money. The 35 Jhansi-based accounts are under scrutiny for their connections to the arrested individuals, with officials reviewing KYC documents, account ownership details, and transaction histories.

Digital Evidence

Digital devices, including mobile phones and banking tools, are being analyzed to identify potential links to broader criminal networks. Investigators are examining digital records to determine the destination of assets post-conversion.

Expert Insights

Cybercrime expert Prof. Triveni Singh, a former IPS officer, highlighted that layered account structures are common in financial fraud schemes. He emphasized the importance of tracing actual account users, linked devices, and UPI activity to uncover hidden relationships. Singh warned that providing banking services to third parties for profit could lead to severe legal repercussions.

Ongoing Probe and Implications

The probe is expanding to assess potential ties between the Jhansi network and cybercriminals operating in other states. Authorities are working to map the full financial trail, confirm the identities of fund suppliers, and identify additional participants in the operation. The case underscores the evolving tactics of cybercriminals, who increasingly rely on complex financial mechanisms to launder illicit gains.
