LinkedIn Browser Extension Tracking Exposed
Professional Networking Site Accused of Corporate Espionage and Data Breach
A recent investigation by Fairlinked e.V., a group representing businesses and professionals, has uncovered alleged corporate espionage and data breach practices by a leading professional networking site.
The Investigation
The report, dubbed “BrowserGate,” claims the platform uses hidden code to scan users’ computers for software and tools installed, potentially compromising their privacy.
The Scope of the Scanning
- The platform tracks over 500 job-seeking tools, which could alert employers if a staff member is quietly looking for a new role.
- The platform scans for over 200 products competing with its own services, such as Lusha, Apollo, and ZoomInfo.
Sharing of Data
The report further suggests the platform is dodging European regulations by providing two public APIs, which handle only 0.07 calls per second, compared to the platform’s internal API, Voyager, which handles 163,000 requests per second.
The Platform’s Response
The platform has denied these allegations, citing a developer’s account restriction for breaking its rules.
Legal Ramifications
A German court has sided with the platform, denying the developer’s request for an injunction.
Expert Advice
While the exact motivations behind the scanning are disputed, it is evident that the platform is keeping a close eye on users’ browsers than initially realized.
