Lucknow’s First Mobile Malware Cyber Fraud Made a Man Lose 8 Lakhs
“Recently, the first case of mobile malware cyber fraud came from Lucknow, which cost a fortune to an innocent person.”
On Friday, a resident of Nishatganj claimed to have been defrauded of Rs 8.70 lakh, marking the first instance of mobile malware cyber theft in Lucknow. The case was only filed on Friday, even though the incident occurred on July 20.

APK (Android Package Kit) scams and remote access trojan (RAT) attacks are common terms used to describe mobile malware cyber fraud.

On July 20, the victim got a call on his cell phone from an unidentified number about upgrading his Aadhaar card.
He then downloaded and installed the “iMobile.apk” APK file that was provided to his WhatsApp. Soon after, the victim claimed that his private savings account was accessed without authorization due to a hacked mobile phone.
On the same day, five distinct fraudulent transactions of Rs 1.99 lakh, Rs 1.99 lakh, Rs 1.98 lakh, Rs 1.50 lakh, and Rs 1.23 lakh were made using his debit card. A total of Rs 8.70 lakh has been siphoned. Additionally, the victim used the National Cyber Crime Helpline to file a complaint (1930).

| “The program secretly gives the attacker direct access to the phone when the victim unintentionally installs it, enabling them to read SMS, intercept OTPs, keep an eye on screen activity, and use banking apps.”
According to Singh, these APKs have embedded code that exploits mobile devices despite their seemingly innocuous appearance.
“They can record your screen activity, access internet banking apps, read SMS and OTPs, steal debit/credit card information, and occasionally even lock your phone,” he warned. |
