Meta Intensifies Crackdown on Deceptive Advertisers

In a concerted effort to combat scams on its platforms, Meta has filed multiple lawsuits against companies and individuals in Brazil, China, and Vietnam. The lawsuits target entities that employed deceptive tactics to run scam ads, and the company has taken technical enforcement actions to disrupt these operations.

Scams in Brazil

In Brazil, the lawsuits accuse individuals and companies of using manipulated images and voices of celebrities, as well as deepfakes of a prominent physician, to promote unapproved healthcare products and sell courses teaching others how to replicate these tactics. These scams aimed to deceive users into purchasing unauthorized products or services.

Scams in China

Meta has also taken action against a China-based technology firm that allegedly used celebrity-bait ads to lure users in the United States and Japan into fraudulent investment groups. This type of scam typically involves using the image or likeness of a celebrity to entice users into investing in a fake opportunity.

To combat these “celeb-bait” scams, Meta has developed a program that protects the images of over 500,000 celebrities and public figures worldwide. This program is designed to prevent their images from being used in scams.

Scams in Vietnam

In Vietnam, Meta has brought a case against an individual accused of running a subscription fraud scheme that used cloaking to bypass ad review systems and generate unauthorized recurring charges. Cloaking involves disguising the true content of an ad to evade detection by review systems.

Improving Detection and Enforcement

To improve its ability to detect cloaking, Meta is leveraging AI tools that help identify harmful redirects, reject scam ads more quickly, and respond faster to user reports. The company is also reviewing its Business Partner program to tighten oversight and reduce the risk of partners helping clients bypass enforcement systems.

Broader Efforts to Combat Scams

These efforts come as Meta faces growing criticism over its handling of scams on its platforms. Recent reports suggest that a significant portion of the company’s revenue may be generated from ads tied to scams and banned goods. By intensifying its crackdown on deceptive advertisers, Meta aims to improve the security and integrity of its platforms.
