“Microsoft’s Xbox division is reportedly planning to lay off up to 2,000 employees, sparking fear among developers who worry entire studios might close. These potential cuts are adding to the gaming industry’s anxiety, which has already seen layoffs this year.”

It seems that the Xbox employee needs to rethink continuing their job at Microsoft this week. Rumors are everywhere that Microsoft’s current scenario could cause layoffs. Developers are in a very tense situation, figuring out what will happen due to the rumors of the closing of entire studios.

Why are Xbox Studios at risk?

Once again, Microsoft is in the process of laying off employees. In the process of reorganizing the organizational structure, Microsoft is continuously strategizing to reduce staff in the Xbox department next week. According to Bloomberg, managers in the Xbox department are expecting frequent layoffs.

According to The Verge, internally, it has been notified to managers and the Xbox department that they could be impacted by layoffs next week.

Will Xbox cut up to 2,000 jobs?

Microsoft’s gaming department could get even more tense because internal sources and a gaming industry veteran have warned of an even tense situation in the future.

George Broussard, a seasoned industry veteran, Duke Nukem

“Internal sources expect the layoffs to be harsh on employees, wrote George Broussard, a seasoned industry veteran and one of the founders of Duke Nukem, on Bluesky.”

He said that over 2000 employees could get terminated, impacting 10% of the Xbox workforce in total. It has also added to the tense situation that the situation doesn’t seem to be improving.

The Game Post Report

“News has reported imminent Xbox layoffs, but I’m hearing internal developer stuff where people at most studios are anxious and worried,” Broussard stated. “Word is that entire studios may be shuttered. Expectation is 1000-2000 people,” as quoted in a report by The Game Post.

These terminations are other than the decision made recently this year. Around 6000 employees were terminated in May from the Xbox department and other teams. A total of 300 employees were laid off in the previous month.

Habitually, at the beginning of 2024, the firm laid off 1900 employees from ZeniMax, Activision Blizzard, and Xbox. Currently, no official notification has been received.

How is this impacting employees?

The rising rate of reports and the specific data coming into the spotlight are creating a mess. It is creating uncertainty about their jobs for the next week, while developers are waiting for their turn. Rumors that entire studios are in jeopardy heighten the sense of urgency.
