Navi Mumbai Cyber Police have initiated legal proceedings against three individuals following the discovery of over ₹11.48 crore allegedly funneled through suspected mule bank accounts.
Investigation Details
The investigation involves a detailed review of financial records, customer verification documents, and digital transaction logs, with no arrests reported at this stage.
Financial Transactions
According to preliminary findings, ₹11,48,23,733 was reportedly credited to the accused individuals’ bank accounts before being transferred to multiple accounts or otherwise diverted.
Authorities’ Focus
Authorities are examining the operational patterns of these accounts, the origin of the funds, the identities of recipients, and the full transaction history.
Separate Case in Pune
In a separate case, Mumbai Police recently apprehended two individuals in Pune for allegedly defrauding a Kandivali-based businessman of ₹8.22 lakh through a fraudulent online trading platform and a deceptive initial public offering (IPO) scheme.
Funds Tracing
During the probe, investigators traced approximately ₹3 lakh of the stolen funds to a Pune-based company’s account, leading to the arrest of one suspect.
Account Facilitators
The detained individual reportedly admitted to acting as a mule account facilitator for a fee and provided details about another person allegedly managing the account used in the fraud.
Expert Insights
Cybercrime specialist and former IPS officer Prof. Triveni Singh highlighted that organized cybercrime groups increasingly utilize mule accounts to launder proceeds from online scams.
He warned that individuals who permit others to use their banking credentials, account details, or KYC documents in exchange for financial incentives risk becoming entangled in criminal investigations.
Singh advised the public to never share banking information with third parties and to report any suspicious activity to their bank and law enforcement immediately.
Ongoing Investigation
Police confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing, with efforts focused on identifying the masterminds behind the accounts, mapping the full financial trail, and determining potential connections to cyber fraud cases across multiple states.
Legal proceedings will ultimately evaluate the allegations based on evidence presented in court.
