North Carolina Enhances Cloud Security through Partnership with GovRAMP
The North Carolina Department of Information Technology has entered into a collaborative effort with the nonprofit organization GovRAMP to bolster the security of cloud vendors serving the state. This partnership aims to better safeguard government data by adopting a standardized cybersecurity framework for evaluating cloud vendors.
Standardized Cybersecurity Framework
As part of this initiative, North Carolina will utilize GovRAMP’s framework, which aligns with guidance from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This framework will serve as a benchmark for assessing cloud vendors, requiring them to undergo audits and ongoing monitoring to ensure compliance.
According to Teena Piccione, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Information Technology and State Chief Information Officer, “By adopting a consistent approach, we are not only protecting the state’s digital assets, but also empowering agencies to more quickly deliver online services to North Carolinians.”
Benefits of the Partnership
GovRAMP functions as a validation program, providing state agencies with a standardized cybersecurity framework grounded in NIST guidance. With this partnership, North Carolina joins over 23 states, including California, Arizona, Texas, Georgia, Utah, and Michigan, that already utilize or recognize GovRAMP’s approach to evaluating cloud providers.
This collaboration is expected to enhance the security posture of North Carolina’s cloud infrastructure, ultimately benefiting the state’s agencies and citizens. By leveraging a standardized framework, the state can more effectively assess the security of cloud vendors and ensure the protection of sensitive government data.
