A recent operation by Polish authorities has dismantled an organized cybercrime group that used phishing tactics to compromise over 100,000 accounts.
Modus Operandi
The group, which operated in both Poland and Germany between May 2022 and May 2024, was responsible for creating fake websites that mimicked popular news portals.
These websites featured sensational and attention-grabbing headlines, often claiming the death of a public figure, in an attempt to lure victims into clicking on the link.
Once clicked, the link prompted a login window, which captured the user’s credentials.
The stolen information was then used by the suspects to access accounts and carry out further fraudulent activities.
Investigation and Prosecution
The Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime (CBZC) identified 11 members of the group, six of whom were placed in pretrial detention as part of the investigation.
Prosecutors have brought over 400 charges against the group members, including leading and participating in an organized criminal organization, unlawfully accessing accounts, online fraud, and money laundering.

The CBZC reported that the seized credentials included logins and passwords for a specific website, which were stolen by the perpetrators.
