Trading Group Traps Pune Techie in ₹67.94 Lakh Fraud

A 55-year-old IT professional in Pune fell victim to a sophisticated financial fraud scheme involving a deceptive trading platform. The scam began when the individual, initially hesitant about stock market investments, was approached by individuals posing as representatives of an investment firm. These fraudsters allegedly lured the victim with promises of high returns on minimal investments, using a multi-stage approach to build trust before executing the deception.

The Scam’s Progression

The scheme started with a small financial incentive. A female contact, claiming to represent an investment organization, contacted the victim and presented the group as a provider of stock and IPO recommendations. To establish credibility, the fraudsters allegedly deposited ₹5,400 into the victim’s bank account, framing it as an initial investment assistance. This act convinced the victim of the group’s legitimacy, prompting him to follow their investment suggestions.

Initial Lure and Trust-Building

Over time, the victim began transferring funds through the fraudulent platform. On September 2, he initiated the first transfer of ₹9.70 lakh. Subsequent transactions on later dates added ₹31 lakh and ₹27.24 lakh, bringing his total investment to ₹67.94 lakh. The fake trading interface displayed a fabricated profit of ₹8.46 crore, creating the illusion of substantial returns. This false representation encouraged the victim to continue engaging with the platform.

The Withdrawal Red Flag

The scam unraveled when the victim attempted to withdraw his funds. At this stage, the fraudsters demanded an additional ₹1.17 crore in brokerage fees as a prerequisite for processing the withdrawal. This requirement raised immediate red flags for the victim, who was already using legitimate trading platforms and was aware that such charges were not standard practice.

Verification and Reporting

To investigate further, the victim visited the physical office of a company whose name had been misused by the fraudsters. Upon verification, he discovered that the organization had no connection to the trading platform or the individuals involved. This revelation led him to report the incident to the cybercrime helpline and the Pune Cyber Police.

Cybersecurity Experts’ Insights

Cybersecurity experts highlight that such scams often rely on psychological manipulation and staged financial transactions to gain trust. Scammers typically begin with small, genuine deposits or returns to create a false sense of security. Once victims are convinced of the platform’s authenticity, they are pressured to invest larger sums. The fraudulent system then inflates profit metrics to encourage further investments. When victims attempt to withdraw funds, additional fees are imposed, prolonging the deception.

Authorities’ Advice

Authorities advise investors to exercise caution when engaging with online trading platforms. Verification of the platform’s legitimacy, including cross-checking the operating company’s credentials, is critical. Promises of unusually high returns within short timeframes should be treated with skepticism. Additionally, any requests for upfront payments or fees during withdrawal processes should be regarded as potential indicators of fraud.

The Importance of Due Diligence

The case underscores the importance of due diligence in financial transactions, particularly in the digital space. Cybercriminals increasingly exploit trust through deceptive tactics, making it essential for individuals to remain vigilant and seek independent verification before committing funds.
