Security Breach at Rewari Jail Triggers Crackdown

The recent escape of two undertrial prisoners from the Rewari district jail in Haryana has prompted a thorough investigation and disciplinary action against several prison officials.

Details of the Incident

Two individuals, identified as Zahid (21) and Faizan (22), who were being held on cyber fraud charges, went missing from their cells during a routine roll call.
An immediate search operation was launched, involving local police and special teams, resulting in the recapture of the duo within 24 hours.
Zahid was apprehended on March 28, while Faizan was caught on the same day in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh.

Preliminary Investigations

Preliminary investigations revealed that the pair exploited a vulnerability in the prison’s security system, taking advantage of ongoing construction work inside the facility.

According to sources, “the duo scaled the boundary wall using a ladder and escaped through a construction loophole.”

Negligence on Part of Warders

An initial review of the incident points to negligence on the part of seven warders who were on duty at the time of the escape.

“Their failure to exercise proper vigilance allowed the breach to occur,” said an official.

Disciplinary Action

All seven personnel have been suspended pending further investigation.

“If evidence suggests the involvement of senior officials, they too may face disciplinary action,” added the official.

Wider Implications

The incident has sparked a wider debate about the need for improved prison security and management practices.

“The Rewari district jail, which was built at an estimated cost of ₹95 crore, is designed to accommodate approximately 1,000 inmates,” said another official.

However, the recent security lapse has highlighted the importance of balancing infrastructure with rigorous supervision and protocol adherence.

The authorities are now focused on identifying accountability and addressing systemic weaknesses within the prison’s security framework.

“This will involve a comprehensive review of existing procedures and protocols, as well as enhanced training for staff to ensure that similar incidents can be prevented in the future,” concluded the official.
