A network of electronic devices intended to threaten U.S. government leaders and constitute an immediate threat to national security was taken down by the U.S. Secret Service on Tuesday. The devices were spread throughout the tri-state area around New York.

“100,000 SIM cards spread across several locations and more than 300 co-located SIM servers were found as a result of this protective intelligence study.”

Within a 35-mile (56-kilometer) radius of the United Nations General Assembly gathering in New York City, the devices were concentrated. The Advanced Threat Interdiction Unit of the Secret Service has opened an
investigation into the incident.

In addition to sending anonymous phone threats, the advanced devices could be used as weapons to carry out a number of attacks on the telecommunications network, such as taking down cell phone towers, causing a denial-of-service attack, and enabling encrypted communication between criminal organizations and possible threat actors.

Additionally, the Secret Service stated that preliminary data suggests cellular communications between federal law enforcement, known people, and nation-state threat actors. The identities of these actors were not described in detail. Additionally, the agency did not specify the nations that might have been engaged, the type of threat, or the officials who were threatened.

The investigation found vacant electronic safehouses rented in the region, including Armonk, New York; Greenwich, Connecticut; Queens, New York; and across the river in New Jersey. CNN and NBC News reported that the network anonymously sent assassination threats against high-ranking U.S. officials.

“It is impossible to overestimate the threat that this network of devices poses to our nation’s telecommunications.”

“This investigation makes it apparent to potential bad actors that imminent threats to our protectees will be swiftly probed, tracked down, and eliminated.” “The U.S. Secret Service’s protective mission is all about prevention.”
