Spanish Authorities Apprehend Suspected Anonymous Members Linked to DDoS Attacks on Government Websites

Spanish law enforcement has arrested four individuals allegedly affiliated with the hacktivist collective Anonymous Fénix, in connection with a series of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks targeting government ministries, political parties, and public institutions.

Investigation and Arrests

The arrests, which took place in multiple locations, including Alcalá de Henares, Oviedo, Ibiza, and Móstoles, were the culmination of an investigation that began in May 2025. During this initial phase, authorities identified the group’s leadership, including its administrator and moderator, and gathered evidence that ultimately led to the detention of two additional suspects.

Group’s Activities and Social Media Presence

According to a statement released by the Spanish police, the Anonymous Fénix group commenced operations in April 2023 and was particularly active on social media platforms, where they disseminated information critical of Spanish institutions and those of various South American countries. The group’s activities reportedly intensified following the severe weather event known as the 2024 DANA storm.

Seizure of Social Media Profiles and Disruption of Activities

As part of the investigation, authorities, acting under court order, seized control of the group’s social media profiles, including their X account and YouTube channel, and dismantled their Telegram channel.

Significance of the Arrests

The arrests mark a significant development in the ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime and disrupt the activities of hacktivist groups. The investigation highlights the importance of international cooperation and the need for law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant in the face of evolving cyber threats.
