Colombo
:  The Criminal Investigations Department of Sri Lanka has detained at least 60 Indian nationals who were involved in a gang of people who were involved in internet financial scams.

They were taken into custody on Thursday from the western coastal town of Negombo and the Colombo neighborhoods of Madiwela and Battaramulla.

The CID carried out concurrent operations in the aforementioned areas, resulting in the seizure of 57 laptops and 135 cell phones, according to Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa.

The crackdown comes after a victim complained that they were tricked into joining a WhatsApp group that offered money in exchange for social media interactions.

After initial payouts, victims were forced to make deposits as part of a plan that was discovered through further investigation.  A father-son team in Peradeniya acknowledged helping the scammers, according to the Daily Mirror newspaper in Lanka.

13 individuals were initially arrested, and 57 phones and computers were seized as a result of important evidence found during a raid on a luxurious home in Negombo.

19 more people were arrested during follow-up operations in Negombo, which revealed connections between Afghanistan and Dubai.  According to the report, both tourists and locals were among the victims.

They are suspected of participating in unlawful betting, financial fraud, and other gambling-related acts.
