Doctors in Telangana have suffered losses totaling approximately ₹30 crore due to cyber fraud incidents beginning in September 2024, according to a recent disclosure by the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB).

Cyber Fraud Impact on Telangana Doctors

Rising Threats and Awareness Campaigns

The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has initiated targeted awareness campaigns to address the rising threat of digital deception targeting healthcare professionals. The findings were presented during a specialized cyber awareness session in Hyderabad, where TGCSB Director Shikha Goel outlined the evolving tactics of cybercriminals and emphasized the need for heightened vigilance among medical practitioners.

Goel noted that individuals across all professions, including those with advanced education and significant professional experience, remain vulnerable to sophisticated fraud schemes.

Data on Affected Doctors and Financial Losses

Data compiled by authorities indicates that at least 735 doctors in the state have been affected by cybercrime since September 2024, with cumulative financial losses reaching ₹29.88 crore. Among the reported incidents, business and investment scams emerged as the most financially damaging category, impacting 127 individuals and resulting in losses of ₹22.39 crore.

Type of Fraud Incidents

Additional fraud types documented include digital arrest scams, identity theft, impersonation schemes, and advertisement-based deception. Other reported offenses encompass job fraud, sextortion, insurance fraud, UPI-related scams, matrimonial fraud, and cryptocurrency-related schemes.

Exploitation of Professional Credibility

Officials highlighted that cybercriminals often exploit the professional credibility of healthcare workers to execute complex attacks. The TGCSB has reiterated the importance of prompt reporting to mitigate damage.

Authorities stress that submitting complaints within the critical “golden hour” via the 1930 cybercrime helpline or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal can enhance the likelihood of freezing fraudulent transactions and recovering stolen assets.

Collaboration and Proactive Measures

The awareness meeting, attended by over 72 representatives from major medical associations across Telangana, focused on fostering collaboration between cybersecurity agencies and the healthcare sector. Participants included leaders from specialized medical groups such as pediatricians, cardiologists, dentists, orthopaedic surgeons, and gynaecologists, as well as hospital administrators.

Call for Educational Initiatives

The bureau has called for proactive measures, including educational initiatives within medical institutions, to strengthen defenses against emerging threats. Officials underscored that no professional background guarantees immunity from cyber threats, reinforcing the necessity of continuous awareness and rapid response protocols.
