UPI Fraud: India’s Digital Payments System Under Cyber Threat
Cybercriminals Exploit India’s Digital Payments System through UPI Fraud
The widespread adoption of digital payments in India has led to a surge in cybercrime, with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) ecosystem being increasingly targeted by fraudsters. Investigators and cybersecurity experts warn that scammers are using sophisticated tactics to deceive unsuspecting users, resulting in significant financial losses.
Common Tactics Used by Cybercriminals
One common trick used by cybercriminals is the “Collect Request Scam,” where a payment request is sent to the victim, claiming that they must enter their UPI PIN to receive money. However, entering the PIN actually authorizes a payment, allowing the scammer to transfer funds from the victim’s account. Another tactic is the “QR Code Scam,” where victims are asked to scan a QR code that supposedly facilitates refunds or payments, but actually initiates a payment from the victim’s account.
Cybercriminals also pose as customer service representatives of banks or payment apps, asking victims to share sensitive information such as OTPs, UPI PINs, or allow screen sharing access. In some cases, scammers claim to have mistakenly transferred money to the victim’s account and pressure them to return the funds quickly by sending money to another account.
Exploiting Lack of Awareness
The rapid growth of digital payments has created new opportunities for cybercriminals, who exploit users’ lack of awareness about UPI transactions. Many users are unaware that a UPI PIN is only required when sending money, not when receiving it. Scammers take advantage of this lack of awareness by creating a sense of urgency, impersonating legitimate organizations, or offering fake rewards and refunds.
Precautions to Mitigate Risks
Experts warn that fraudsters often obtain phone numbers through leaked databases or social media platforms, allowing them to target victims with tailored scams. To mitigate these risks, cybersecurity authorities recommend that users follow basic precautions when using UPI-based payment applications. These include verifying the receiver’s name before confirming any transaction, never allowing unknown persons to access their screen or install screen-sharing applications, and avoiding suspicious payment requests.
Consequences of UPI Fraud
In recent cases, UPI fraud has resulted in significant financial losses, with reports of lakhs being fraudulently transferred from bank accounts. In one instance, a UPI fraud scheme using stolen phones was busted in Aligarh. The government has reported that ₹805 crore has been lost to UPI frauds this year.
What to Do if You Fall Victim to UPI Fraud
If a user falls victim to UPI fraud, they should immediately contact their bank to block suspicious transactions, call the National Cybercrime Helpline, and file a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Cybercrime officials emphasize that reporting fraud quickly increases the chances of freezing fraudulent accounts and recovering funds.
Public Awareness: The Strongest Defense
As India continues to transition towards a cashless economy, public awareness remains the strongest defense against UPI fraud. Users are urged to stay vigilant, verify transactions carefully, and never share sensitive financial credentials with anyone. By taking these precautions, users can minimize their risk of falling victim to UPI fraud and protect their financial information.
