US State and Local Governments Warned of Potential Iranian Cyber Retaliation

Following the recent joint US-Israel strikes against Iran, which resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Center for Internet Security’s Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) has warned US state and local governments of a heightened risk of “low-level cyber activity” from Iran. This warning comes as Iran and its allies, Russia and China, have already begun mobilizing hacking campaigns in response to the attack.

Potential Cyber Threats

According to MS-ISAC, these cyber intrusions may include distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, which could potentially disrupt critical infrastructure and services. As a result, state and local government officials have been advised to take immediate action to remediate their critical and cloud infrastructure, implement robust firewalls and content delivery networks, and limit the availability of sensitive data on their organizations and employees.
