Odisha:  In a ‘digital arrest’ scam, a 26-year-old West Bengal man was arrested on Thursday for allegedly defrauding an Odisha man out of almost Rs 73 lakh.

The offender, a citizen of the Howrah district in neighboring West Bengal, was taken into custody by a team of the Odisha Police Crime Branch on Wednesday after a guy from Paradip filed a complaint at a cybercrime police station on May 15, according to a senior officer.

The complainant said that he was contacted by cybercriminals posing as Delhi Police and CBI officers, who informed him that a package lodged in his name had been seized by Delhi customs.

The man from Odisha claims he was told he would face legal action unless he paid Rs 73.62 lakh to establish his innocence.

Thus, the person who complained was put under ‘digital arrest,’ and he finally transmitted Rs 73.62 lakh to the fraudsters’ account,” the officer from the crime section stated.

A new type of cyber fraud known as “digital arrest” occurs when an accused person calls someone, threatening to arrest them while posing as a law enforcement officer, such as a customs detective or CBI official.

According to the officer, a mobile phone, SIM cards, Aadhar cards, and the fraudsters’ bank accounts were among the other incriminating items that the police confiscated.

The Odisha Police’s CID branch issued a warning to the public about scammers posing as law enforcement or judges on social media and messaging apps and threatening to “digitally arrest” them.
