63-Year-Old West Bengal Man Loses ₹66.6 Lakh in Phishing Scam Through Online Dating App
“After meeting a woman on a dating app, a 63-year-old Salt Lake resident was defrauded of Rs 66.6 lakh in an investment scam. By promising him large returns, the woman convinced him to invest and added him to a Telegram group.”
Even after a lot of cyberawareness campaigns and media articles, people are not giving it much thought before getting scammed online by phishing criminals. Just like that, a case has come into the spotlight.
A woman he met on a dating app allegedly tricked a 63-year-old Salt Lake man into falling for an online investment scam, causing him to lose Rs 66.6 lakh. On Thursday, the man complained to the Bidhannagar Cybercrime Police Station.

How did the crime happen?
- On April 14, the victim made contact with the woman and started a WhatsApp conversation with her.
- She convinced him to make an internet investment within a week by promising him large returns.
- The deceit escalated when she later added him to a Telegram group.
- The man initially invested Rs 20,000 and got modest profits, which increased his confidence.
- Following the woman’s advice, he eventually sold his flat, took money out of several accounts, put in his whole life savings, and made investments in the alleged scheme.
