Western Governments Lay Groundwork for Secure 6G Networks: Enabling Future-Proof Connectivity
Global Coalition on Telecoms Introduces 6G Security and Resilience Principles
Governments worldwide are taking proactive steps to ensure the security and resilience of next-generation 6G mobile networks. To this end, the Global Coalition on Telecoms (GCOT), comprising seven countries, has introduced a set of 6G Security and Resilience Principles.
GCOT and Industry Partners
The GCOT, which includes the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, Sweden, and Finland, aims to establish a common framework for the development of 6G networks. Industry partners supporting the initiative include prominent companies such as Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, Qualcomm, NEC, AT&T, Vodafone, and NVIDIA.
6G Security and Resilience Principles
The 6G Security and Resilience Principles emphasize the need for 6G systems to be protected from both cyber and physical threats. They also stress the importance of resilient supply chains and reliable service provision. These principles are designed to serve as a foundation for future work on 6G standards and will inform industry research and development.
According to a statement from the UK Government, the principles “build on existing GCOT publications, including those on AI and Open RAN certification.”
Industry experts welcome the introduction of these principles, recognizing the importance of establishing security and resilience standards early in the development process.
“Although the commercial launch of 6G networks is still several years away, it is crucial to establish the principles that will guide its development and support its success,” said Rob Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering at Virgin Media O2. “We are pleased to have been part of this process and look forward to continuing to work with the GCOT and industry partners to ensure the security and resilience of 6G networks.”
