Coimbatore is experiencing a significant rise in online financial crimes, with law enforcement agencies documenting more than 55 cyber fraud reports each day across municipal and district areas.

Rising Cyber Fraud Incidents in Coimbatore

Data from the Coimbatore City and District Cyber Crime Wings indicates that approximately 6,000 complaints were filed since the start of 2026, with the city wing handling around 35 cases daily and the district wing processing an additional 20. This trend reflects a sustained upward trajectory, increasing from roughly 9,500 cases in 2024 to nearly 10,000 in 2025.

Structured Investment Schemes and AI-Driven Matrimonial Fraud

Investigative teams have identified structured investment traps as the most common form of digital deception in the region. Fraudsters typically initiate contact through messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Instagram, offering minimal compensation for completing simple online tasks like writing business reviews or engaging with promotional content.

Structured Investment Schemes

After demonstrating initial reliability through small, timely payments, perpetrators encourage victims to invest larger sums under the pretense of high-return opportunities promising daily earnings of up to ₹5,000 or monthly returns exceeding ₹60,000. Once funds are transferred, operators abruptly cut off communication and vanish.

AI-Driven Matrimonial Fraud

Simultaneously, matrimonial fraud has seen a marked increase, with criminal groups employing artificial intelligence tools to target unmarried men aged 35 and older. These schemes often involve fabricated profiles and tailored communication strategies to exploit emotional vulnerabilities and establish trust before demanding financial contributions.

Challenges in Investigation and Urgency of Timely Reporting

Police officials emphasize that tracing perpetrators and recovering stolen funds remains complex due to the rapid dispersion of illicit proceeds through extensive networks of mule bank accounts. While freezing fraudulent accounts before asset conversion is a critical success factor, many victims delay reporting incidents for days or weeks, allowing syndicates to erase digital evidence and complete multi-stage money laundering processes.

Psychological Tactics

Cybercrime expert and former IPS officer Prof. Triveni Singh highlighted the psychological tactics used by criminal organizations, noting that they exploit financial greed, emotional weaknesses, or fears of legal consequences to bypass rational decision-making.

Authorities Urge Immediate Action for Victims

Law enforcement agencies advise individuals who fall victim to these schemes to immediately contact the 1930 national cybercrime helpline or submit a report through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Delayed reporting significantly reduces the likelihood of recovering stolen assets and hinders investigative efforts.
