The Scam Unveiled
A business owner in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, lost ₹7.5 lakh after falling for an online scheme offering fraudulent diesel and petrochemical storage licenses. The scam involved deceptive social media advertisements and false assurances of regulatory approvals, leading to financial loss and legal investigation.
Deceptive Social Media Ads
The incident unfolded when a local transport operator, Pallav Ashokbhai Dholakiya, encountered an Instagram post promoting services for obtaining consumer diesel pump and petrochemical storage licenses under the name “Falcon Group of Companies.”
False Assurances of Compliance
Seeking to expand his logistics operations, Dholakiya and his business partner, Rajnibhai Chad, contacted the numbers listed in the advertisement. A suspect, identified as Prashant Dhanjibhai Jalodhara from Surat, posed as the firm’s Managing Director and claimed to facilitate the licensing process.
The Victims’ Experience
The accused, along with his brother Jatin Jalodhara, proposed a service fee of ₹15 lakh and arranged a site inspection at a location in Sanes to finalize the project’s logistics. They provided assurances of regulatory compliance and secured a partial payment of ₹7.5 lakh through cash and RTGS transfers.
Discrepancies and Disappearance
Following the transaction, the suspects sent documents purportedly confirming license approvals, including notarized paperwork. However, discrepancies in the documents raised suspicions, and the promised physical licenses failed to materialize. When the victims attempted to contact the suspects, both phone numbers were disconnected.
Investigation Reveals Patterns
A subsequent visit to the Jalodharas’ residence in Surat revealed that the brothers had previously targeted multiple individuals with similar tactics and had since fled. The victims then filed a police report, prompting an investigation into the fraudulent activities.
