Mumbai police apprehended a 26-year-old educator for creating and distributing counterfeit Android Application Package (APK) files linked to a nationwide financial scam impacting nearly 3,000 individuals.

Arrest Details

The suspect, identified as S.K. Mandal, was detained in West Bengal on July 24 following a surveillance operation. The investigation traced the origin of the fraud to a series of malicious applications masquerading as legitimate updates for Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL).

Investigation Findings

Digital forensic analysis revealed that Mandal supplied 91 tailored APKs to organized crime networks across multiple states. The malicious software targeted 2,993 victims, resulting in 9,192 fraudulent banking transactions.

Authorities also recovered 967 undistributed fake APKs during a raid, preventing potential losses exceeding ₹1,000 crore. The operation uncovered 10 mobile devices, one laptop, seven SIM cards, four debit and credit cards, and confidential banking data linked to approximately 37,200 customers.

Cybercrime Methods

The cybercriminal network exploited the deceptive nature of the MGL KYC updates to deceive users into installing the malware. Once deployed, the applications granted attackers remote access to devices, enabling them to intercept One-Time Passwords (OTPs), monitor keystrokes, and manipulate mobile banking interfaces.

Prof. Triveni Singh, a former IPS officer and cybersecurity analyst, emphasized that fraudsters frequently impersonate essential service providers to lure users into downloading compromised software. He advised the public to avoid clicking on unsolicited links or downloading applications from unverified sources, stressing that legitimate updates should only be obtained through official channels.
