Hyderabad Cyber Crime authorities have apprehended an individual linked to a ₹3 crore political identity fraud scheme, with the suspect transferred from Punjab to the city for further legal proceedings.

The Arrest and Transfer

The accused, identified as Gaurav Kumar, also known as Gora, 45, hails from Nehru Colony in Tung Baba, Majitha Road, Amritsar, Punjab. He was detained by Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police under a Production Transit warrant and transported to the city on September 10, 2026, following an investigation into a broader network of deceptive practices.

The Case Origin

The case originated from a complaint filed on July 1, 2026, by Jetti Kusuma Kumar, a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). The complainant alleged that an unidentified individual impersonated Kanishka Singh, a political aide associated with Rahul Gandhi, and contacted them through communication channels. The fraudulent actor reportedly offered political advantages, such as positions and benefits, in exchange for financial compensation.

Fraud Details and Impact

The complainant provided call records and digital evidence to law enforcement, prompting an inquiry into the misuse of the political figure’s identity. Investigations revealed that Kumar was connected to a larger scheme involving multiple victims across various states. Authorities stated that the fraud encompassed approximately ₹3 crore in cash and gold items, with 14 individuals affected.

Modus Operandi

The suspect allegedly exploited the reputation of a Congress party political aide to deceive candidates from different parties who had contested Assembly elections. By claiming to possess political influence, Kumar purportedly secured monetary and material gains from victims under the guise of facilitating political support. The modus operandi involved leveraging telecommunications and messaging platforms to establish credibility.

Law Enforcement Advice

Law enforcement emphasized that such tactics underscore the importance of verifying claims independently before engaging in financial transactions. Police have issued advisories urging the public to exercise caution when encountering unsolicited communications claiming to represent political entities. Individuals are advised to confirm the authenticity of such interactions through official channels.

Prior Involvement and Transfer

The suspect’s prior involvement in another case led to his arrest by Punjab Police, which facilitated his transfer to Hyderabad for the current investigation. The case highlights the evolving nature of identity-based fraud, particularly in politically sensitive contexts, and the need for heightened vigilance against deceptive practices that exploit public trust.

Reporting Mechanisms

Evidence such as call logs, message transcripts, and transaction records should be preserved in case of suspected fraud. Reporting mechanisms include contacting the dedicated cybercrime helpline at 1930 or submitting complaints via the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in.
