Meta Unveils New Security Features for WhatsApp to Enhance Account Protection

Meta has implemented three new security measures aimed at improving account safety.

Upgraded Two-Step Verification System

The platform emphasized its commitment to user privacy, stating that conversations remain confidential between users. This principle underpins the development of end-to-end encryption as a default feature, alongside ongoing efforts to expand security protocols. A key update involves replacing the existing six-digit PIN for two-step verification with a longer alphanumeric password that supports special characters. This change increases resistance to brute-force attacks and unauthorized access.

Enhanced Caller Identification

On Android devices, users will now receive contextual information before answering calls from unregistered numbers. The system provides details such as the caller’s country code and potential risk indicators, helping users assess legitimacy before engaging. This feature addresses tactics used by fraudsters to exploit urgency and hesitation.

Passkey Functionality Expansion

Meta also expanded passkey functionality, allowing users to authenticate with biometric data like fingerprints, facial recognition, or device locks instead of traditional codes. Over a billion users have already adopted passkeys, enabling seamless login across platforms. The update now supports cross-device compatibility, ensuring consistent access for users switching between Android and iOS devices.

These additions follow recent security initiatives, including a June rollout of a warning screen for chats with unfamiliar numbers and May’s Incognito Chat feature. The latter allows private interactions with Meta AI without the platform accessing conversation data. The company continues to prioritize user control, stating that future updates will focus on reinforcing account security through innovative tools.
