Nav Mumbai Cyber Police have launched a major operation to dismantle a suspected nationwide network of mule bank accounts linked to cyber fraud activities, based on findings from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

Investigation into Mule Bank Accounts

The operation follows a detailed analysis of financial transaction data from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP), which uncovered patterns of suspicious activity involving specific bank accounts. These accounts were reportedly used to process and redirect funds from cyber fraud incidents across the country.

Key Details of the First Investigation

Three accounts at Fino Payments Bank were flagged after being associated with 154, 187, and 1,809 cyber fraud complaints, totaling 2,150 incidents. Transaction records indicated that funds from fraud were deposited into these accounts before being transferred or withdrawn. The activities spanned from 12 February 2024 to 17 March 2026.

Key Details of the Second Investigation

Four accounts at an Indian Overseas Bank branch in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were linked to 303 cyber fraud complaints nationwide. These accounts were suspected of receiving illicit proceeds, facilitating fund transfers, or enabling cash withdrawals. The transactions occurred between November 2025 and May 2026.

Role of Mule Accounts in Cybercrime

Authorities emphasized that mule accounts are critical to organized cybercrime operations, allowing perpetrators to obscure the origins of stolen funds. Cybercriminals use deceptive tactics such as fake investment opportunities, part-time job offers, and digital arrest scams to lure victims into transferring money.

Methods of Fund Laundering

Funds deposited into mule accounts are often routed through multiple accounts to mask the ultimate beneficiaries. Investigators are examining digital evidence, banking records, and transaction histories to trace the full flow of funds and identify orchestrators of the operations.

Public Awareness and Legal Actions

Cybercrime officials have reinforced public awareness campaigns, advising against renting, selling, or allowing others to use personal bank accounts for financial gain. Such actions could result in criminal liability if the accounts are later used in cybercrime. The investigation remains ongoing, with further legal actions contingent on evidence gathered.

Authorities stressed that mule accounts are pivotal in cybercrime networks, enabling criminals to hide the source of illicit funds.

Conclusion

The Navi Mumbai Cyber Police operation highlights the growing threat of mule bank accounts in cyber fraud schemes. By targeting these networks, authorities aim to disrupt financial flows linked to organized cybercrime and protect citizens from exploitation.
