A retired High Court judge was targeted in a digital arrest scam aimed at extorting money.

“Another case related to digital arrest has added to the current scenario in which a High Court Judge is involved.”

Through a “digital arrest” fraud, scammers attempted to extort Rs 2 crore from former Bombay High Court judge Vijay Daga by using a video call to accuse him of a crime and demanding money.

The former judge told reporters that their effort failed because he ignored their threats and called the police instead.

How did it all happen?

1.    Daga, a citizen, claimed that at around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, he received a video call from an unknown someone wearing a police uniform.

2.    He was accused of being connected to an extortion case filed at the Borivali police station in Mumbai by the caller, who was seated in what appeared to be a police station.

3.    According to the caller, a SIM card that was bought with Daga’s Aadhaar card had been used for illegal activities, including one that included a Canara Bank account that was opened in his name in 2023.

4.    A lady posing as a senior officer took over the phone when Daga denied any wrongdoing and threatened to arrest him unless Rs 2 crore was paid right away.

5.    She warned that if the money was not sent electronically by 2:30 pm, he would be arrested without being granted bail.

What happened after the trap?

Daga informed reporters that he immediately alerted the Bombay High Court’s protocol officer as well as the Nagpur Police’s cyber cell. The call was traced to the border between Gujarat and Rajasthan by investigators.
