Nevada Hit By Cyberattack Causing State Offices to Shut Down for 2 Days

“Following a Sunday cyberattack, Nevada state offices were temporarily shut down, disrupting government websites and phone lines. Although an investigation is ongoing, no personal data was compromised, and emergency services were unaffected as state employees returned to work.”

What happened?

Governor Joe Lombardo’s office announced Tuesday that a cyberattack forced Nevada to close state offices for two days this week, causing numerous government websites and phone lines to go down.

Issues

The governor’s website was among the digital infrastructures affected by the breach, which was discovered on Sunday. Officials emphasized that there was no proof that personal data had been hacked, but they did withhold technical information, citing the continuing inquiry.

Emergency services kept running without interruption. On Monday, state workers were placed on administrative leave while the systems were evaluated. Many went back to work on Tuesday, and as computers come back up, more are anticipated to start working again.

Nevada’s Office of Information Technology

Agencies will issue separate announcements on when counters reopen for in-person services, Nevada’s Office of Information Technology said. The attack underscores rising concerns over cybersecurity vulnerabilities in public administration.

Similar occurrences have devastated municipal governments across the United States in recent years. For example, in 2020, a cyberattack knocked down government services in Tillamook County, Oregon, and in 2018, a ransomware assault in Baltimore stopped automated 911 dispatching for about 17 hours.

Nevada authorities are still looking into the attack’s origin and evaluating its long-term effects.
