Kanpur Municipal Corporation Website Breach

The Kanpur Municipal Corporation’s website was taken offline following a cyberattack, with officials launching an investigation into the breach.

Investigation Efforts

A team from the National Informatics Centre (NIC) has been dispatched to aid in the recovery effort and assess the extent of the damage.

According to sources, “The attack appeared to have occurred on Thursday at approximately 2 pm, with hackers gaining unauthorized access to the corporation’s portal. The incident appears to have originated from an IP address located in Bangladesh, although further verification is required through forensic analysis.”

Preliminary Findings

  • Sensitive data, including the mayor’s and corporate officials’ photographs and contact information, as well as minutes of municipal meetings and budget-related documents, were compromised during the breach.
  • It remains unclear whether this data was deleted or copied by the attackers.

Public Services Uninterrupted

Municipal authorities have assured citizens that essential public services, such as birth and death certificate processing, tax collection, and tender-related work, continue uninterrupted through alternative digital platforms.

Cybersecurity Measures

  • The restoration process will necessitate a thorough security audit, which will scrutinize the server architecture, authentication systems, access controls, and monitoring mechanisms.
  • Only once these security concerns are addressed and the system deemed secure will the portal be restored to the public.

Warning to Residents

Residents are advised against clicking on unverified links or responding to unsolicited calls purporting to be from the corporation. Any suspicious activity should be reported to the national cybercrime helpline at 1930.

Recovery Efforts

Efforts are currently underway to recover compromised data, conduct forensic examinations, and strengthen the system to prevent future attacks.
