Prayagraj Resident Loses ₹9 Lakh to Phony Customer Care Scam

A teacher in Prayagraj fell prey to a sophisticated phishing scheme resulting in the loss of nearly ₹9 lakh. The scam began when the victim, a school teacher named Shokhi Gautam, sought assistance with a malfunctioning fan by searching online for the customer care number of its manufacturer.

The Scam Unfolds

  • The victim searched online for the customer care number of the fan’s manufacturer.
  • A seemingly legitimate contact number was found, which she called, and a self-proclaimed customer service representative assured her that her issue would be resolved.
  • The representative convinced her to provide personal and banking information, promising a technician would visit her residence the next day.
  • The victim filled out online forms, supposedly necessary for processing her request.

According to sources, the cybercriminals created a convincing narrative to gain the victim’s trust, promising resolution and a technician visit.

The Unauthorized Transactions

  • The scam culminated in four unauthorized transactions executed via the Punjab National Bank account of the victim.
  • Between 2:00 p.m. and 2:40 p.m. on May 22, the cybercriminals withdrew a total of ₹9 lakh using RTGS and IMPS.

Authorities Launch Investigation

Following the discovery of the unauthorized transactions, the victim contacted her bank and filed a complaint with the National Cyber Crime Helpline.

  • The authorities are examining transaction records, beneficiary accounts, and digital communication related to the case.
  • Their primary objective is to trace the money trail and identify those responsible for the fraudulent activities.

As part of their efforts, the police are attempting to determine how the perpetrators acquired the necessary information to execute the high-value transactions.

Important Reminder

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with seeking customer support through unofficial channels.

  • It highlights the importance of verifying the authenticity of contact numbers and websites.
  • Be cautious when providing sensitive information or making payments to unknown parties.
