Seven Arrested in Cyber Fraud Scandal: Fake Police and NIA Officials Impersonated
Seven individuals have been detained in connection with cybercrime operations involving deceptive practices such as impersonation of law enforcement and intelligence agency personnel, fraudulent investment schemes, and the use of fabricated documentation.
Cybercrime Operations Involving Deceptive Practices
The incidents, investigated by local authorities, involved multiple tactics including digital communication manipulation and financial exploitation. The fraudulent activities were reportedly coordinated by a network suspected to have origins in Rajasthan, with operational hubs in Hong Kong and Dubai.
Impersonation of Law Enforcement and Intelligence Agency Personnel
Law enforcement officials have identified and apprehended three individuals—Ravi, Rajveer, and Arvind—in relation to a case where victims were contacted via video calls and threatened with legal repercussions. The perpetrators allegedly posed as members of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and local police, fabricating claims of involvement in money laundering and terrorism-related offenses to coerce financial settlements.
Fraudulent Investment Schemes
A separate investigation revealed a scheme targeting investors through social media platforms. Fraudsters utilized Instagram advertisements to lure victims with promises of high returns on stock market investments. Once engaged, victims were directed to Telegram groups and a proprietary trading platform. One individual reportedly transferred a total of ₹2.87 crore across 33 transactions, with investigators tracing the funds through 38 bank accounts.
Arrests in Investment Fraud Case
The arrested suspects in this case include Mohan Darsande, Bhupendra Jain, and Yogesh Jain, with ongoing inquiries examining the flow of funds and potential accomplices.
AI-Generated Identities for Fraud
Another case involved the deployment of artificial intelligence to generate synthetic voice and visual identities. A suspect allegedly contacted the father of a resident in the Ubhar area, using an AI-generated voice and photograph to simulate an emergency situation, demanding ₹50 lakh. The perpetrator, Netram Chadar, was detained in Indore.
Forged Documents and Financial Exploitation
A separate incident saw a suspect impersonating a motor company employee, utilizing a forged letterhead to facilitate an RTGS transfer of ₹9.50 lakh. Durgakumar Bhagat Bahadur, arrested in Kanpur, was linked to this scheme.
Ongoing Investigations and International Links
Investigations are ongoing to assess the financial records, digital communications, and international connections of the arrested individuals. Authorities are examining potential links between the suspects and overseas cybercrime networks, particularly those based in Hong Kong and Dubai.
Diverse Methods of Deception
The cases highlight diverse methods of deception, including government official impersonation, investment fraud, AI-generated identities, and forged financial documents. Law enforcement continues to analyze digital and financial evidence to determine the full scope of the operations and identify additional participants.
