Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister’s X account was hacked, with Pakistani and Turkish flags displayed on the profile, sparking security concerns.
Hackers briefly took over Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s official X account on a tense cricket day between India and Pakistan, streaming pictures of the Turkish and Pakistani flags before cybercrime officials regained control. Despite being stopped within an hour, the hack has sparked serious worries about how vulnerable India’s senior leaders’ online personas are.
A Breach on a High-Visibility Day
On Sunday, September 21, 2025, the official X (formerly Twitter) account of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was compromised. Officials claim that the assailants posted pictures of the Turkish and Pakistani flags. The timing was remarkable: the hack occurred as India and Pakistan were getting ready for their second Asia Cup cricket match, which was a time when the nation was paying close attention.

Authorities verified that hackers increased visibility by posting more than one photograph and streaming it live from the stolen account. Users were instantly alerted to the intrusion, which sparked discussion on how India’s leading political figures protect their online platforms.
Cybercrime Response and Account Recovery
According to officials with knowledge of the situation, the breach was discovered promptly, and the cybercrime police were notified right away. To stop the dissemination of illegal content, law enforcement and a dedicated team in charge of the Deputy CM’s social media accounts collaborated.

According to an official, “it took about 30 to 45 minutes to set the account in order.” By that time, the handle had been fixed and most of the offensive material had been eliminated. The current emphasis of the inquiry is tracking down the attack’s origin and identifying whether it came from foreign or domestic sources.
Concerns Over Political Cybersecurity
Concerns over Indian politicians’ and state officials’ online safety are becoming more prevalent as a result of the hacking incident. Even though Shinde’s account was quickly restored, cybersecurity professionals caution that these kinds of hacks can have more significant geopolitical repercussions, particularly when foreign symbols are used to incite strong feelings.

Officials said additional security layers would be put in place for the Deputy CM’s digital communication channels. The instance does, however, highlight a larger national vulnerability: the stakes for protecting online platforms are growing as more political discourse takes place there.
