Mumbai Cyber Police Launches Door-to-Door Campaign Educating Senior Citizens on Online Safety
Mumbai Takes Proactive Measures Against “Digital Arrest” Scams
In a concerted effort to combat the growing threat of cyber fraud, particularly among its most vulnerable residents, the city of Mumbai has launched a door-to-door awareness campaign targeting senior citizens.
- Over the course of four months, cyber teams have reached out to over 3,500 elderly residents, educating them on the tactics employed by scammers and providing guidance on how to protect themselves from digital threats.
Primary Goal:
- The primary goal of this initiative is to dispel the notion of a “digital arrest,” a psychological ploy used by fraudsters to intimidate victims.
- According to official data, Mumbai reported approximately 191 instances of this type of scam last year, resulting in financial losses exceeding ₹100 crore.
- In 2024, the number of cases increased to around 193.
Countermeasures:
- Cyber teams have been visiting residents’ homes, primarily on Saturdays, when they are most likely to be at home.
- The teams consist of around 40 personnel, divided into 20 groups, operating during morning and evening hours to minimize disruptions to daily routines.
- During these visits, officials clearly explain that no law enforcement agency conducts arrests via video calls and advise citizens to disconnect any such calls immediately.
- Residents are also cautioned against sharing personal or banking information under pressure and provided with contact details for police and cyber helpline services to report suspicious activities.
Expansion:
- The teams aim to reach as many people as possible, having already expanded their operations beyond South Mumbai to cover other areas of the city.
Experts note that scams like “digital arrest” rely heavily on social engineering, creating fear and psychological pressure to prompt victims into making impulsive decisions.
Cybercriminals rely more on psychology than technology. If individuals remain calm and alert, they can avoid falling into such traps.
