Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Busts Large-Scale SIM Card Fraud Scheme

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made significant progress in disrupting the infrastructure supporting cybercrime activities in India. A major breakthrough led to the arrest of a key individual involved in a large-scale SIM card fraud scheme known as Operation Chakra-V.

Sophisticated Network Uncovered

An investigation uncovered a sophisticated network responsible for issuing over 10,000 fraudulent SIM cards, which were used in various scams across the country. The suspects exploited weaknesses in verification processes at Points of Sale (POS) outlets to create clandestine communication channels facilitating large-scale financial crimes.

According to officials, the arrested individual, Ubaid Ullah, “played a pivotal role in obtaining and distributing the illicit SIM cards” and was “involved in digital arrest frauds, fake loan schemes, and other types of financial scams.”

Further investigation revealed that Ullah had transferred approximately Rs 67 lakh via multiple bank accounts to POS agents in exchange for the SIM cards. The use of courier services to transport the cards highlighted the organized nature of the operation.

Law Enforcement Efforts

Law enforcement agencies conducted searches at 45 locations across eight states, resulting in the arrest of ten POS agents allegedly connected to the racket. The CBI views this network as a critical enabler of organized cybercrime and emphasizes the need to dismantle the infrastructure sustaining such activities.

“The CBI has underscored the importance of coordinated and intelligence-driven action, along with inter-agency collaboration, in combating cybercrime effectively,” according to officials.

With Ullah’s arrest, investigators are now working to identify and apprehend other conspirators linked to the racket, aiming to dismantle the infrastructure that allows cybercriminal operations to function and expand.
