Rise of Sophisticated Cybercrimes: ₹3.66 Lakh Stolen Through Link and SMS Diversion

In a disturbing trend that highlights the increasing complexity of cybercrime, a 57-year-old man in Rajasthan lost ₹3.66 lakh due to a well-planned scam involving a fake doctor’s appointment link and SMS diversion.

According to officials, the victim, who resides in Ajmer, searched online for a doctor’s contact number on April 18 for his child’s treatment.

The victim fell prey to a sophisticated scam when a caller posing as a hospital representative sent him a link to book an appointment. Despite the victim refusing to make a ₹10 UPI payment, the damage had already been done when he clicked the malicious link.

Technical Analysis Reveals Sophisticated Tactics

Cyber experts revealed that the link served as a malware gateway, allowing unauthorized access to the victim’s phone and enabling attackers to infiltrate sensitive data stored on the device.

The attackers then exploited this access to divert the victim’s banking SMS notifications to three unknown mobile numbers, facilitating the withdrawal of ₹3,66,199 in five separate transactions.

According to cyber experts, the scam may be linked to an organized cybercrime syndicate operating across multiple states.

Warning Signs and Precautions

Cyber experts warn that such fraud is becoming increasingly advanced, with fraudsters using convincing messages, cloned websites, and fake booking systems to mislead users.

Once a user clicks on a malicious link, attackers can gain access to phone permissions, SMS services, and even banking authentication data, allowing them to intercept OTPs and transaction alerts.

Citizens are advised to exercise caution when searching online and avoid clicking on unknown or unverified links, even if they appear to be related to hospitals or official services.

Police Advisory for Public Safety

Authorities emphasize the importance of immediately reporting suspicious activity to prevent further exploitation.

As the digital age continues to evolve, it is essential for individuals to stay vigilant and take proactive measures to protect themselves from sophisticated cybercrimes.

Ongoing Investigation and Future Concerns

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to identify other members of the network and determine whether additional victims are involved.

This incident highlights the growing risks in the digital age, where convenience often comes with hidden vulnerabilities.
