Chinese National Accused of Participating in State-Sponsored Cyberattacks Faces Extradition to USA
A 34-year-old Chinese national, Xu Zewei, has been extradited to the United States to face charges related to his alleged involvement in several high-profile cyberattacks.
- Xu worked on behalf of China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) and Shanghai State Security Bureau (SSSB)
- Targeted institutions engaged in COVID-19 research, US universities, and other organizations
- Exploited Microsoft Exchange Server zero-day vulnerabilities, compromising thousands of systems worldwide
- Deployed web shells to gain remote access, prompting the FBI to execute a court-authorized operation to remove malicious tools from hundreds of systems in the US
