Cyber Police Bust Online Scam Ring Selling Non-existent iPhones

On May 15, 2026, authorities in Haryana’s Hisar district made a significant breakthrough in the fight against cybercrime by apprehending two individuals who had been running an elaborate online scam targeting unsuspecting iPhone buyers.

The Scam Operation

The duo, operating from a rural area called Bahbalpur, had been using fake Instagram advertisements to lure victims into parting with their money for non-existent smartphones.

According to officials, the accused individuals had set up fake Instagram profiles showcasing extremely low prices for brand-new iPhones, as low as Rs 2,500. This was significantly lower than the market price, making it an attractive proposition for potential buyers.

However, once the victims agreed to purchase the phones, the scammers would demand additional payments for “booking” and “delivery” charges, eventually diverting the funds into various bank accounts.

The Investigation

POLICE INVESTIGATIONS REVEALED THAT THE SUSPECTS HAD BEEN USING MULTIPLE SIM CARDS AND CREATING NEW FAKE INSTAGRAM IDS WHENEVER THEIR PREVIOUS ACCOUNTS WERE SHUT DOWN DUE TO COMPLAINTS. THIS ALLOWED THEM TO EVADE DETECTION AND CONTINUE THEIR ILLEGAL OPERATIONS UNDETERRED.

The Arrests and Seizures

The authorities, led by the Hisar Cyber Police, received a tip-off on May 13 about the suspected cybercrime activities. Following this lead, they launched a raid on the suspects’ location and seized several items, including mobile phones, laptops, bank documents, and cash worth Rs 10,040.

The Confession

DURING QUESTIONING, THE ACCUSED CONFESSED TO THE SCAM AND ADMITTED THAT THEY HAD NOT DELIVERED ANY ACTUAL PHONES TO THEIR VICTIMS BUT INSTEAD POCKETED THE MONEY. FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS ARE UNDERWAY TO IDENTIFY MORE VICTIMS AND DETERMINE IF THE SUSPECTS ARE LINKED TO A LARGER CYBERCRIME NETWORK.
