MHA Warns Against Cybersecurity Risks for Remote Workers
Fake Online Interview Scams and AI-Powered Biometric Fraud
The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a warning to job seekers about a rising trend of fake online interview scams and AI-powered biometric fraud.
Tactics Used by Cybercriminals
-
Cybercriminals impersonate recruiters, multinational companies, and HR consultants to conduct fake virtual interviews and collect sensitive personal and financial information from applicants.
-
They use AI-generated voice calls, manipulated video interactions, and fraudulent websites designed to look like legitimate recruitment portals.
-
Cybercriminals contact victims through messaging platforms, social media, or fake job advertisements promising high-paying employment opportunities.
-
Once victims engage with these scammers, they are asked to provide sensitive information such as Aadhaar details, PAN information, passport copies, photographs, or facial verification videos under the pretext of completing recruitment formalities.
Precautions to Take
-
The Ministry warns job seekers not to share sensitive biometric information with unverified recruiters or unknown online platforms.
-
It advises them to verify recruitment communications through official company websites and authorized HR channels before sharing personal information.
-
The Ministry cautions against making payments for interview scheduling, document processing, training fees, or job confirmations.
-
Many victims have been deceived into transferring money after receiving fake offer letters and appointment confirmations.
Reporting Incidents
The Ministry encourages victims of online recruitment fraud to report incidents through the National Cyber Crime Helpline (1930) and cybercrime reporting platforms.
Law enforcement agencies are concerned about the increasing use of AI in cyber-enabled financial fraud, identity theft, and social engineering attacks.
Public awareness and digital verification practices are becoming increasingly important in preventing these types of scams.
