Cybercrime Landscape Shifts in Karnataka: Focus on Mule Account Networks

The Karnataka Cyber Command, led by Director General of Police Pronab Mohanty, has shifted its focus to disrupting mule account networks, recognizing their central role in facilitating cybercrime operations.

Mule Accounts: A Central Component of Cybercrime Ecosystem

  • Compromised bank accounts used to launder stolen funds through multiple layers
  • A crucial component of the cybercrime ecosystem
  • Involve compromised bank accounts, used to facilitate money laundering

Cybercrime Trends in Karnataka

Cybercrime has surpassed traditional crime patterns in Karnataka, requiring a coordinated approach that integrates enforcement, cyber hygiene, outreach, capacity building, and cybersecurity.

According to Director General of Police Pronab Mohanty, “Cybercrime is becoming more complex and sophisticated, and we need to address the infrastructure that sustains it.”

Categorization of Cyber Offenses

The police have categorized cyber offenses into three groups:

  • Traditional cybercrimes
  • Cyber frauds
  • Crimes against women and children

Traditional Cybercrimes

Phishing, skimming, data theft, hacking, credit card theft, and spamming fall under traditional cybercrimes.

Cyber Frauds

Cyber frauds have become increasingly prominent and are now the primary focus of the police.

Crimes Against Women and Children

Crimes against women and children remain the most critical aspect of the cyber landscape, including the dissemination of child sexual abuse material and cyberstalking, bullying, sextortion, deepfakes, and deep nudes.

Social Media and Cyber Safety

Social media plays a significant role in spreading misinformation and increasing exposure to cyber fraud risks, particularly among children and teenagers.

Protecting Children Online

To protect children from online predators, Mohanty stressed the need for parents and peers to monitor behavior online and suggested that social media counselors in schools could be beneficial.

Dismantling the Cybercrime Ecosystem

The Cyber Command is working to dismantle the cybercrime ecosystem by identifying and targeting mule account networks and those managing them.

Focusing on Financial Backbone of Cybercrime

By addressing the financial backbone of cybercrime, the authorities aim to not only detect ongoing crimes but also prevent future ones.

Building Specialized Manpower

The Cyber Command will focus on building specialized manpower through training and stronger technical expertise, considering two options: training existing police personnel in cyber investigations or recruiting experts with technical backgrounds and later training them in policing.
