Four Common Cyber Scams: How Scammers Use Calls, Apps, and Websites
Cybercriminals have reportedly defrauded residents in a city of over ₹4.56 lakh across four distinct incidents involving deceptive technical support requests, fraudulent investment platforms, identity impersonation, and unauthorized hotel booking transactions.
Mobile Phone Update Request Leads to Bank Fraud
Mohammad Hanif, stated that on May 30 he attempted to update his phone but faced repeated failures. He contacted a local repair service, after which he received a call from an unidentified number. The caller claimed unauthorized transactions were occurring on his bank account. Upon checking, Hanif discovered ₹80,000 and ₹7,500 had been transferred to an external account. Authorities are examining the digital footprint of the transaction to identify perpetrators.
Telegram Investment Scheme Costs Woman ₹1.34 Lakh
According to her complaint, unknown individuals contacted her via multiple Telegram IDs and a related website, urging her to transfer funds. She reported transferring ₹35,888 from her Kotak Mahindra Bank account and ₹99,000 from her Punjab National Bank account via UPI transactions.
Investigators are analyzing the mechanisms used to execute the transfers and the identities of those involved in orchestrating the scheme.
Impersonation and Booking Scams Under Investigation
Another case involves a Dalanwala resident who was informed by a caller posing as a bank representative that ₹1 lakh had been withdrawn from their account. Upon visiting the bank, the victim discovered the funds had been illicitly accessed. A separate complaint filed at Patel Nagar Kotwali details a ₹1.41 lakh loss tied to a hotel booking transaction. The complainant, a professional in marketing, alleged fraud during a booking process. Police are reviewing digital evidence and communication records to trace the source of these scams.
All four incidents are under active scrutiny by law enforcement, with officials focusing on forensic analysis of financial transactions and digital communications to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
The cases highlight the evolving tactics of cybercriminals in exploiting vulnerabilities through multiple channels, including phone calls, messaging apps, and online platforms.
