Senior citizens in Hyderabad experienced over ₹102 crore in financial losses due to cyber fraud across 403 reported cases, according to recent data.

Financial Losses and Scam Types

The majority of these incidents involved trading scams, which accounted for the highest monetary impact. Trading fraud emerged as the most damaging category, with cybercriminals targeting victims through platforms such as Telegram, offering deceptive investment opportunities in forex and stock markets via fraudulent applications. In 113 cases, losses totaled ₹55.88 crore, while 69 instances of digital arrest threats resulted in ₹31.93 crore in damages. Additional losses stemmed from other tactics, including OTP fraud, investment scams, and dating fraud.

Case Example: The 75-Year-Old Victim

A 75-year-old retired government employee from Jubilee Hills fell victim to a scheme involving a part-time job offer that transitioned to a Telegram group promoting foreign exchange trading. Fraudsters allegedly demonstrated fabricated profits before extracting ₹96 lakh in fees. Investigators noted that family members often overlooked irregularities in the victim’s digital activity or banking transactions, delaying detection until substantial losses occurred.

Decline in Cyber Fraud Cases

Police reported a decline in cyber fraud cases involving elderly individuals in 2026, attributing the reduction to increased bank interventions. The monthly average of cases dropped from 24 in 2025 to 17 in 2026. However, authorities emphasized the need for continued vigilance.

Police Commissioner’s Warning

Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar warned against “digital arrest” threats, clarifying that no law enforcement agency employs such tactics. He advised seniors to disregard unsolicited communications claiming to represent police or government officials. The commissioner stressed that no legal procedure permits financial demands or interrogations via phone or video calls.

Reporting Cybercrime

Victims are urged to report cybercrime immediately through the national cybercrime reporting portal or by calling 1930. Authorities highlighted that prompt reporting during the “golden hour” could enable banks to freeze transactions and enhance recovery chances.

Conclusion

The data underscores the vulnerability of elderly populations to sophisticated online deception, with fraudsters exploiting financial and emotional vulnerabilities. Cybersecurity experts continue to advocate for education and proactive measures to mitigate risks.
