Kerala Police Warn Public About Fake WhatsApp Gift Scams to Prevent Fraud
Kerala Police have issued a public warning about a coordinated cyber financial fraud operation leveraging messaging platforms.
Kerala Police Advisory
Kerala Police have issued a public warning about a coordinated cyber financial fraud operation leveraging messaging platforms. Authorities in Thiruvananthapuram highlighted that cybercriminals are using the branding of established dairy companies and other reputable businesses to deceive individuals.
Scam Details
The scam involves deceptive messages offering false incentives such as “Anniversary Gifts” and “Free Gifts” to extract money and sensitive personal information from victims. The fraudulent scheme begins with messages containing malicious hyperlinks designed to mimic official connections to well-known brands.
How the Scam Works
Clicking these links redirects users to cloned websites that closely replicate the appearance of legitimate corporate portals. These counterfeit sites are engineered to appear authentic, making it challenging for users to identify the deception.
The Process
Once on the fraudulent platform, victims are prompted to complete a brief survey about the company and its products. After submission, a simulated “Scratch and Win” mechanism is triggered, falsely informing users they have won a prize. This multi-step process is intended to manipulate user trust and encourage further interaction.
Social Network Exploitation
A key component of the scam is the requirement for victims to share the fraudulent message with contacts or distribute it across social groups. Law enforcement noted that this tactic exploits existing social networks, amplifying the reach of the campaign while creating an illusion of legitimacy.
Device Security Risks
The advisory emphasizes that engaging with these links can compromise device security, enabling cybercriminals to gain remote access to mobile devices. This access allows theft of banking details, interception of one-time passwords (OTPs), and unauthorized access to financial accounts.
Milma’s Response
The Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (KCMMF), operating under the brand Milma, has taken legal action against the fraudulent activity. Milma, a trusted dairy brand in Kerala for 46 years, confirmed it has filed a police complaint regarding the misuse of its trademark.
Public Alert
The cooperative also issued a public alert through verified social media channels, urging consumers to avoid clicking on the malicious link associated with the “Milma’s annual celebration gift” message.
Legal Efforts
Separate legal efforts are underway to remove active scam URLs. Kerala Police have advised individuals who encounter this fraud to report incidents promptly. The agency continues to monitor and address emerging cyber threats to protect the public from financial and data-related risks.
“Milma has filed a police complaint regarding the misuse of its trademark. We urge consumers to avoid clicking on the malicious link associated with the ‘Milma’s annual celebration gift’ message.”
