Synology has released version 2.0 of its ActiveProtect Manager (APM 2.0), a data protection solution designed for its ActiveProtect appliances. The update expands cloud and virtualization compatibility while introducing advanced security measures to improve data resilience.

Key Features of APM 2.0

APM 2.0 addresses challenges in managing distributed backup systems, reducing costs and recovery times. It unifies data protection by integrating specialized storage hardware with robust management tools, according to Jia-Yu Liu, EVP of the Synology Data Protection Group.

Enhanced Compatibility

APM 2.0 extends support to Amazon EC2, Azure Virtual Machines, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV, and Google Workspace. Cross-platform recovery allows backups to be restored across diverse environments, facilitating disaster recovery and migration between on-premises and cloud infrastructures.

Expanded Backup Options

ActiveProtect Vault now supports a broader range of Synology NAS devices. Azure Blob Storage has been added as a target for data replication and tiering. Backups in Amazon S3 or Azure Blob Storage can now be directly restored into Amazon EC2 or Azure VM instances, eliminating the need for intermediate hardware.

Advanced Security Measures

APM 2.0 introduces software-based volume-level encryption to protect data at rest. This ensures backup data and system configurations remain inaccessible without proper authorization.

Future Updates: APM 2.1

APM 2.1 will include AI-driven anomaly detection to monitor backup versions for irregularities like sudden data modification changes, large deletions, or entropy shifts. Suspicious backups will be isolated in a quarantine zone for review. The system will refine detection accuracy over time.

Third-Party Antivirus Integration

APM 2.1 will integrate Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, and ESET to scan backups for malware. If malicious content is detected, the Auto Fallback mechanism will restore the last verified clean version.

Availability and Benefits

APM 2.0 is now available for all DP Series appliances. The update emphasizes improved operational efficiency and security for enterprises managing complex hybrid infrastructures.

According to Jia-Yu Liu, EVP of the Synology Data Protection Group, “APM 2.0 enhances this framework by enabling organizations to secure hybrid environments through a centralized, scalable platform.”
