20 Arrested in Cybercrime Operations Targeting SIM Card Fraud and Illicit Financial Networks Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police have detained 20 individuals across two distinct operations targeting the unauthorized acquisition and exploitation of SIM cards and bank accounts linked to cyber fraud schemes.

Investigation into Alleged SIM Card Misuse

The first operation centered on the suspected misuse of multiple SIM cards, resulting in the arrest of three point-of-sale (POS) agents. These individuals were accused of circumventing standard verification protocols to obtain SIMs. Subsequently, five additional suspects associated with SIM distribution were apprehended, bringing the total in this case to eight. Authorities allege that the SIMs were later deployed in fraudulent activities, including phishing and identity theft. The probe is examining the procurement methods and subsequent deployment of these devices in cybercrime operations.

Focus on Mule Bank Account Activities

A separate operation targeted 12 individuals suspected of managing mule bank accounts designed to facilitate unlawful financial transactions. This effort was initiated following intelligence shared by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). The operation targeted accounts believed to be instrumental in laundering funds derived from cyber fraud. During the raids, law enforcement recovered ATM cards, bank passbooks, laptops, and cheque books, which are being analyzed to trace the flow of illicit funds.

Role of Mule Accounts in Financial Crime

Mule bank accounts are typically used to temporarily hold funds before transferring them to criminal networks, often to obscure the origin of illicit proceeds. Investigators are currently tracing financial trails to identify additional participants in the scheme. The case highlights the growing reliance on such accounts to process transactions linked to scams, phishing attacks, and other cyber-enabled crimes.

Ongoing Probe and Network Expansion

Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to uncover the broader networks connected to these activities. The probe includes examining financial records and identifying individuals who may have contributed to the misuse of SIM cards and bank accounts. Law enforcement is also working to determine the extent of collaboration between suspects and potential external actors.

Preventive Measures for Individuals

Cybercrime experts emphasize the importance of safeguarding personal financial and telecommunications data. Individuals are advised to maintain control over banking documents and SIM card credentials, avoiding unauthorized access to accounts or mobile networks. Secure practices, such as enabling two-factor authentication and regularly monitoring financial statements, are recommended to mitigate risks associated with fraud.
