FBI Verified Multiple Detentions in ShinyHunters Cybercrime Probe The Federal Bureau of Investigation has verified the apprehension of several individuals linked to a cyber incident attributed to the ShinyHunters extortion collective. This confirmation followed reports of the detention of Saif al-Din Khader, a suspected group affiliate, in Jordan. The arrest occurred on September 29, as disclosed by sources familiar with the case.

Khader, who operates under the alias “Rey,” is reportedly cooperating with law enforcement agencies to provide details about other associates within the organization. A bureau representative stated, “The agency remains committed to thoroughly examining the recent cyber incident associated with ShinyHunters, having already collaborated with partners to detain multiple individuals. Resources will continue to be allocated to ensure all accountable parties face legal consequences.”

The FBI has not disclosed the identities of those arrested or confirmed Khader’s involvement in the detentions.

Global Law Enforcement Action Intensifies

Khader’s arrest coincided with the detention of a 24-year-old Dutch national, Pepijn van der Stap, known online as “Umbreon,” in Amsterdam on September 15. The FBI described him as an alleged leader of ShinyHunters and alleged that he and accomplices targeted over 140 organizations, extorting at least $70 million since 2025. While Dutch authorities have not officially identified the individual, independent reports confirm his association with the alias “Umbreon.” ShinyHunters has denied any connection to van der Stap.

The FBI has acknowledged the Dutch arrest but has not publicly disclosed the suspect’s identity or specified which cases were included in its reference to “multiple” detentions.

Ongoing Cybersecurity Breach Investigation

The arrests occur amid the FBI’s probe into the September compromise of FBIJobs.gov, which ShinyHunters claimed involved the exfiltration of sensitive data related to current, former, and prospective FBI employees. The group later characterized the incident as a publicity stunt rather than a financial motive. The ShinyHunters data leak platform remains active, retaining existing victim records and operational infrastructure.

The continued availability of the site suggests that its administrative controls were not disrupted following Khader’s detention. The absence of new claims or updates does not clarify whether the site’s management has shifted or if the investigation has impacted its operations.

Law Enforcement Warns of Further Action

Brett Leatherman, assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Division, previously indicated that seizures of infrastructure and arrests could expose remaining members of the group. FBI Director Kash Patel has emphasized that investigators are pursuing new leads, with “additional arrests under consideration.” Current details about the individuals detained by the FBI remain limited, leaving uncertainties about Khader’s role in the investigation and the total number of arrests.

ShinyHunters’ data leak site remains operational, with existing victim listings and public infrastructure intact. The group’s continued online presence raises questions about its operational resilience despite law enforcement actions. The FBI’s ongoing efforts to dismantle the network highlight the complexities of combating decentralized cybercriminal enterprises.
