Beware of Scammers Using Fake APK Links to Steal from PM-KISAN Beneficiaries
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme Has Been Exploited by Scammers Using Malicious APK Files
In a worrying trend, cybercriminals have been utilizing the reputation of the Indian government’s Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme to spread malicious APK files that can compromise Android smartphones and drain user bank accounts.
According to cybercrime expert Professor Triveni Singh, “The primary mechanism behind these attacks relies on social engineering, where fraudsters leverage the credibility of government schemes to deceive victims.”
Experts Explain How Scammers Distribute Malicious Files
- Scammers distribute files labeled “PM KISAN.apk,” which, when installed, grant the attackers access to sensitive information, including one-time passwords (OTPs), login credentials, and financial data.
- By leveraging remote access techniques, the perpetrators gain control over the victim’s device, enabling them to execute unauthorized transactions without detection.
The PM-KISAN Initiative: A Target for Scammers
The PM-KISAN initiative aims to provide annual financial assistance of ₹6,000 to millions of farmers across India in three installments, directly credited to their bank accounts. Unfortunately, the program’s popularity has made it an attractive target for scammers seeking to exploit unsuspecting individuals.
Mitigating the Risks
- Only accessing official websites and verified applications.
- Disabling the “Install from Unknown Sources” option on mobile devices.
- Refraining from sharing sensitive information, such as OTPs or banking credentials.
- Reporting suspicious activities to banks or cyber helplines.
By staying vigilant and adhering to these guidelines, individuals can minimize the risk of falling prey to these sophisticated scams.
