A man from Faridkot lost ₹14.10 lakh after a fraudster posing as his US-based nephew manipulated him through a fabricated payment receipt and fabricated travel-related emergency.

The Scam Unfolds

The incident occurred in Punjab’s Faridkot district, where a local resident fell victim to a cyber fraud scheme involving identity impersonation. The suspect initially established contact via a phone call, falsely presenting as the victim’s nephew residing in the United States. During the conversation, the fraudster claimed to be arranging a surprise visit to India and requested the victim’s bank details under the pretense of initiating a financial transfer.

The Fraudster’s Tactics

The scammer subsequently sent a counterfeit document purporting to show an ₹18.01 lakh deposit into the victim’s account. Following this, the accused alleged that their passport had been detained, urging the victim to transfer ₹14.10 lakh to a specified bank account to resolve the issue.

The Victim’s Experience

According to the victim, Lal Chand, a resident of Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, received a call from an unknown number on September 6. The caller identified as Pawan Kumar, the victim’s nephew, and stated plans to arrive in India on September 22. The individual requested discretion about the visit and asked Lal Chand to refrain from informing other family members.

“The fraudster then contacted the victim again, claiming passport-related complications and demanding ₹14.10 lakh to address the issue. The victim complied, transferring the amount to the specified account. After receiving the funds, the scammer requested an additional ₹1 lakh, prompting the victim to seek verification.”

Investigation and Response

Contacting his actual nephew in the United States, Lal Chand discovered the caller had impersonated his relative. The real Pawan Kumar confirmed no communication had occurred, exposing the fraud. Following this revelation, the victim reported the incident to cybercrime authorities, initiating an investigation. Law enforcement agencies are currently tracing the suspect and analyzing banking records to determine the flow of funds and identify potential accomplices.

Cybersecurity Advice

Cybersecurity experts advise individuals to independently verify urgent financial requests, particularly when originating from unknown numbers claiming to represent relatives. Confirming such claims through established, verified contact methods is critical before sharing sensitive information or initiating transfers. The incident highlights the importance of heightened vigilance against social engineering attacks and the need for robust verification protocols in digital interactions.

Conclusion

The case underscores a prevalent cybercrime tactic involving impersonation of family members or trusted contacts. Scammers often fabricate emergencies related to travel, health, or documentation to pressure victims into transferring money. Fake transaction receipts are frequently used to create the illusion of legitimate financial activity.
