Authorities have expanded their inquiry into a coordinated scheme exploiting India’s Aadhaar identification system, with law enforcement officials confirming the arrest of a key suspect in Prayagraj.

The operation involves allegations of unauthorized manipulation of Aadhaar records through cloning and bypass techniques, targeting multiple districts in Uttar Pradesh. The latest arrest occurred on Sunday when cybercrime investigators detained Sanjule Gupta, a 30-year-old resident of Jalim Ganj village in Kunda, Pratapgarh district. Two mobile devices were recovered from his possession and are undergoing forensic analysis to trace connections within the network. The probe aims to identify additional participants, map financial transactions, and uncover links to intermediaries facilitating the scheme. According to investigators, Gupta was previously associated with a bank branch in Lal Gopalganj. During interrogations, authorities discovered that several Aadhaar operator IDs had become inactive following expired agreements between banks and service providers. The accused is alleged to have collaborated with the syndicate to reinstate these credentials for a fee of ₹5,000 per session. The network’s activities extended beyond reactivating dormant accounts. Police allege that the group charged up to ₹250 for each unauthorized Aadhaar enrollment or update processed through compromised operator IDs. Technical analysis is ongoing to determine how the Aadhaar ecosystem was circumvented, including specific methods used to bypass security protocols and enable fraudulent identity-related transactions. Preliminary findings indicate the operation spanned multiple districts, including Kanpur, Fatehpur, Ayodhya, Pratapgarh, and Chitrakoot. Law enforcement has deployed specialized teams to these areas to locate suspects, gather evidence, and verify the involvement of additional operators. Officials stated that three individuals, including an alleged mastermind, had been detained prior to Gupta’s arrest. Investigators are now focusing on quantifying the scale of the fraud, including the number of illicitly created or modified Aadhaar records, total financial proceeds, and the broader economic impact.

A cybercrime expert and former IPS officer highlighted the risks of such activities, emphasizing that misuse of the Aadhaar system threatens both national security and individual privacy. He urged citizens to access Aadhaar services exclusively through authorized centers and report any unauthorized charges or expedited service offers to authorities.

Forensic teams are analyzing seized digital devices, electronic records, and banking transactions to map the syndicate’s structure. Police indicated further arrests are anticipated as the investigation progresses, with efforts to identify all individuals linked to the multi-district network. The case underscores vulnerabilities in India’s digital infrastructure and the need for heightened vigilance against organized cybercrime. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of adhering to official procedures for identity verification and reporting suspicious activities.
