Cybercriminals Active As Soon As IPL 2024 Starts; They Cheat People by Betting

Recently, as IPL 2024 started, bookies have started making their prey to innocent people who wish to earn something from IPL matches via betting.

As soon as the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) starts, bookies have become active across the country including Uttar Pradesh. Cyber fraudsters have also laid traps to defraud people. The fraudsters trap the people by making them bet on IPL matches and get them to win first.

Then when you get the taste of victory and money, the real game begins.  Fraudsters not only steal your own capital but also trap you in the clutches of moneylenders in their desire to win.

People Lost Their Lives After Losing Money in Betting

A 23-year-old woman committed suicide in Karnataka’s Chitradurga after her husband played betting on an IPL match and lost Rs 1.5 crore.  Due to this, moneylenders were putting pressure on them to return the amount. Similarly, a case has come to light in Jhansi, UP.

After winning two IPL matches, the young man who lost Rs 80 lakh by betting on the remaining matches also committed suicide.  Innocent people are falling into the trap of cyber criminals and are losing huge amounts of money.  It is taking the wrong steps.

Four Notorious Cyber Criminals

Recently, Uttar Pradesh Police arrested 12 people from the Sushant Golf City police station area of Lucknow.  All of them were residents of Jharkhand and Bihar and were involved in betting in IPL.  Surprising things came to light during police interrogation.  Four of the arrested accused were notorious cybercriminals.

They were cheating people of money in the name of betting on IPL through fake websites.  This money was being transferred to those accounts, which were used to dispose of the fraudulent money done through sextortion, debit credit cards, and other methods.  Bengaluru Police had also busted a similar gang.  This gang used to trap people for betting through fake mobile applications.

Then they used to transfer the winning money to the accounts opened for committing cyber fraud.

Modus Operandi of Cheating

According to IPS officer Shashank Singh of Lucknow Police Commissionerate, those arrested as bookies were actually hardcore cyber criminals.  There were about 25 cases registered against him.  All the accused run fake websites and applications (Reddy IPL, IPL Jeeto, IPL Maja) under different names.

These are promoted on social media.  They trap people by luring them with less risk and earning more money.  Then they manipulate people in the beginning and make them win the betting.  When people get addicted to betting and winning money then they cheat lakhs of rupees.
